7th March 2016. Cromford Canal.

A beautiful sunny day encouraged thoughts of an afternoon walk, and a well timed read of Twitter resulted in me seeing a tweet by @andysbutler which resulted in a walk along Cromford Canal, where Andy had earlier seen a showy Water Rail. I have often looked at the reedy fringes of the canal and wondered if I would see one but never had. This one appeared to have been showing out in the open in the brilliant sunshine. We just had to twitch it.

We arrived at Whatstandwell and walked south along the canal. The bird had been calling a lot earlier but we could hear nothing. The sun was out and the air felt spring like for a change. Suddenly there it was peeping out of the reeds on the far side of the canal.

For the next hour or so we enjoyed crippling views as it fed unconcerned by the foot and bike traffic just yards away on the tow path.
